President’s Notes from Lee Hegberg:

Fall is in the air! (Thankfully, it’s not on the “ground“!) After a successful summer of tournaments and various outings, we can reflect on how fortunate we indeed are–to enjoy Marine Memorial “trouble-free”!

The support our members have exhibited in all facets of ensuring good times were had by all–is truly obvious!

The “track” has undertaken vast improvements this year, with the promise of more to come!

Cooperation throughout the “system” definitely shows! The support from “above” as well as the input from all who play has meant a great deal in instant positive steps leading ahead!

I would urge all members of PMGA to exercise their privilege of voting in our upcoming election. Those of us on the Board are developing various means by which to cast ballots. More of this at our September general meeting.

As a “final putt”, be sure to keep pace with our new website  for the latest on our tourneys, upcoming events, golf news, etc. John Pryor and Bob Ross developed this “state-of-the-art” vehicle, so you may drive it!

 Fairways and Greens!

 Lee

Vice President’s Notes from Mike Sullivan:

Gentlemen: It’s election time again for the PMGA. Time has flown and now, after almost 2 years, the current slate of Officers who have been running the show will need to be reelected. Two of us are stepping down and we will need to be replaced. Thankfully, we have some able volunteers who have been willing to step up and fill those positions for the next two years.  The election will be held at the next Quarterly meeting on Wednesday the 14th of September.

In addition to voting in the Officers,  we have some minor changes to our Constitution and By-Laws that will need to be approved by you at the quarterly meeting.

The following are the PMGA Officer positions and the proposed volunteers to fill those positions for the next two years:

President: Lee Hegberg

Vice President: John Pryor

Secretary: Bob Towry

Treasurer: Mike Thomas

The following members have been appointed by the President to fill the Executive Board positions listed below:

Tournament Chairman:  Roger Goodrich

Handicap Chairman: Tom Minton

Men’s Day Chairman: Ardie Adelgais

Military League Chairman:  Dave Duncan

Membership Chairman/Assistant Treasurer : Pete Davis     Note (1)

Note: (1) this is a new billet and will require an amendment to our by-laws

Treasurer’s Notes from Richard Jacobsen:

October and November are membership renewal months for PMGA and SCGA.

Early in October, PMGA will e-mail 2012 renewal forms to all members with an email address in an effort to reduce postage costs.  The renewal forms will also be mailed to those members with no recorded e-mail address.

There will also be 2012 renewal forms available in the PMGA office on the sign up-table for those members who can‘t print out the form on line. These forms will be printed on orange paper.  The membership renewal fee remains at $40.00.  Please make checks payable to PMGA.

Current members who do not renew by the December deadline established by SCGA will be transferred to an inactive status and will not be able to post scores.

As of 1 September, PMGA has a balance of $7,631.01 in the checking account and we currently have 287 members.

Handicap Chairman’s Notes from Tom Mintun:

Things seem to be going well from a handicap standpoint. There have been no significant problems with the posting computer and only a few minor problems with duplicate, or erroneous postings. Please keep up the good work.

I did want to share with you a “Myth” that was written by Jeff Ninnemann, Assistant Director of Rules and Competitions in a recent “Fore” magazine article incase you may have missed it.  He writes as follows:

“”I can’t look at, let alone touch, a bunker rake until my ball is no longer in the bunker. The first question we always get is, ‘Should rakes be left inside or outside the bunker?’ Truth is, there isn’t a rule of golf that mandates either way, however, the Rules do go as far as to recommend that rakes be left outside the bunker, So, moving along, if our ball comes to rest in a bunker, can we carry and place the rake inside the bunker near our ball?  According to my high school golf coach, the answer is no, but in reality. The answer is absolutely. Not only can we bring a rake into the bunker with us, we can also bring extra clubs as well.  Better yet. The clubs that we elect not to use can actually be placed in the sand, right along with the rake,”

Southern California Military League Notes from Dave Duncan:

The 2011 season is quickly winding down. On 23 Aug we played Admiral Baker in our last home match. We won the match by a score of 47 to 43. We have one remaining away match at Sea ’n’ Air on 12 Sep. The sign-up sheet is still posted, but it is pretty full. You can still sign up, but would probably have to play as an alternate. I will be taking the sign up sheet down on Wed, 7 Sep. Our league record is currently 6 wins and 5 losses. Admiral Baker and General Old are tied for first with 7 and 3 records. I will post the final league standings in the next newsletter.

The SCMGL year-end Tournament will be held at Pendleton on Monday, 26 Sep. The entry fee is $75.00 and includes green fees, cart, range balls, generous cash prizes paid to the top eight four man teams, raffle prizes, and a BBQ steak lunch. The four man teams are randomly put together using players from all the teams in the league. Each team will have an A, B, C, and D player. Each men’s club is authorized 20 slots, however, if any of the clubs have less than 20 players other clubs will be given additional slots. We have been given additional slots and the deadline has been extended. I must have your entry fee by 14 Sep. You can pay in cash or make out a check to PMGA. You may five your entry fee to me or Bob Griest or put it in the PMGA mail slot. This is a great tournament and everyone really enjoys playing in it, so don’t miss out.

Men’s Day Chairman from Bob Towry:

Gentlemen:  We will be printing new scorecards in the near future for use during the Wednesday Blitz. The info contained on the card will remain the same, only the layout of the card will change.

In our last newsletter, you might recall that I made an impassioned appeal for volunteers to help run the Men’s Day Wednesday Blitz. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank both Bob Yordt, and Ardie Adelgais, for stepping up and offering their services to the PMGA. They are a breath of fresh air to the rest of us who have been running the blitz  during the last few years. Thanks again to these two great guys.   We are still looking for additional volunteers to learn the job as back ups for the future, so feel free to offer your services if you have the time and the inclination to help us out.

Bob

Tournament Chairman’s Notes from Rodger Goodrich:

Here are the Pinehurst Format Tournament results. This new two-man team format was enjoyed by everyone. Positive comments like, “This was a new kind of pressure – picking up your partner,” and “the alternate shots really made it fun.” Thirty-six players made up 18 teams who played for eight places of prize money. The team of John Wagner and Mike Zawacki won first place money with a net team score of 57. Four strokes back was the second place team of Richard Trinh and Louis Brown. The rest of the winners were: 3rd John Shea and Bob Yordt – net 64 (card off winner); 4th Bob Griest and Mike Sullivan – net 64; 5th Motu Matila and Tanu Taumua – net 67; 6th Tony Sablan and Dan Camacho – net 68; 7th Ken Crouse and Taylor Crouse – net 69; 8th Jim Appel and Mike Sarthou – net 70 (card off winner). Based on the feedback, this will definitely be a tournament format for next year.
Upcoming President’s Cup Tournament On Saturday, September 17th the inaugural one winner, low net, President’s Cup Tournament will be held. The posters and Flyers/Signup sheets are available at the course. There will be both an Individual and a perpetual trophy for this tournament. The perpetual trophy will be displayed in the Pro Shop with the winner’s name engraved each year. Signup deadline is Friday, September 9th, so get your application in now. That is also Demo Day for the course, with all the major golf companies showing their latest products. PMGA will benefit from the food & drink specials that day, but we will also include a free beer/wine/soda to each player after they turn in their scorecards.  Your 1 September handicap will be used in this tournament.

Don’t forget the Turkey Day Tournament on Monday, November 21st. This year there will be a set number of Turkeys and some very unusual ways to win them. More later on that!
