Following graduation from the Naval Academy, Tom went to Pensacola for flight school. After getting his wings, he spent 3 years at moffet Fild, Ca flying the P-3B Orion. Following this he did a 2 year stint at the Naval Academy as navigation instructor. He then left Active Service and began the remainder of his military career as a Reservist still flying the P-3B Orion and later transitioned into billets which allowed him to use his civilia training and expertise in nuclear energy.
His civilian career began in San Francisco in 1973 and evolved into the nuclear industry with Westinghouse and GE. While working at a nuclear power plant he met his wife, Susan. Seven years later they moved back to California where he continued with GE for a couple years and then to other companies in the San Diego area. He retired to Fallbrook in 2006. They have 3 grown daughters and 5 grandchildren.
